This qualifies as a must-see:
On 4/20/10 the Downtown Independent Theater will premiere the documentary aka Tommy Chong.
The film takes us back to the Bush administration’s arrest and imprisonment of Tommy Chong for selling bongs. This is the story of the government’s case, its effects on Chong, and the politics behind it all. Directed by Josh Gilbert, the film has won awards from the Toronto International Film Festival, the San Francisco Independent Film Festival, High Times, and others.
After the screening, head up to a roof party with beer, pizza, and music. Partygoing ticket-holders can also participate in a raffle to win the bong featured in the documentary (valued at $1000) and various gift certificates. Some of the proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to NORML.
The Downtown Independent Theater is located at 251 S. Main Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012, 213-617-1033. For more information, check out akatommychong.com and downtownindependent.com.
Seemingly every metropolis on the globe will participate in the 2010 Worldwide Marijuana March. Well, okay, so it’s only 256 CITIES SO FAR!
Taking place globally on May 1 (rain date May 8), the WMM is organized by Cures Not Wars, a New York-based “coalition of drug-reform activists, users, health-care and drug-treatment providers and social-justice activists committed to advocacy and non-violent direct action to stop the drug war.” The WMM is a worldwide annual rally that includes marches, festivals, raves, and other cannabis-related events held in various locations during the first part of May.
Los Angeles will participate in the marijuana march on May 9th at noon. L.A. residents will march with live plants to Leimert Park, where they will find “speakers, booths, exhibits, comedy.” For more info on the L.A. event, contact Akile: akilekk@yahoo.com, 323-799-8409, blackwebguide@yahoo.com, www.hempishep.org.
If you’re outside L.A., check the Cures Not Wars website to see whether your city’s on the list of participants; if not, and if you want your community to be a part of the Worldwide Marijuana March, contact Dana Beal at dana@cures-not-wars.org, 212-677-4899, or 212-677-7180. You can also request posters for your community.
