Jack Herer, 1939-2010
We’re awaiting confirmation from our inside sources, but it looks like this time it may be true: Jack Herer passed away today in Eugene, OR, at the age of 70.
Renowned cannabis activist and author of The Emperor Wears No Clothes, Jack Herer was born in New York City and started out as a Goldwater Republican. However, his conversion to the counterculture became official when he was inducted into the Counterculture Hall of Fame.
Herer advocated constantly for the decriminalization of cannabis and use of the plant for food, fuel, and medicine. He also wrote the book Grass, was the subject of the documentary The Emperor of Hemp, and had an award-winning strain of cannabis named after him. Herer ran twice for U.S. President.
He will be missed.
